Social Networking
While working on our last assignment and thinking about the different social networking sites that are out there, I began to wonder what makes one more successful than another. So many of the different sites have many of the same features, yet sites such as Facebook and MySpace have much more national and international recognition. Not only do they have a higher number of registered users, but they their name recognition has gained the respect of communities around the world. Why do you think that these certain websites have succeeded as opposed to certain other ones?

Hmmm...yeah, well before last weeks assignment I kind of wondered about that myself. After last weeks assignment, I concluded that the "presentation of self" that each of these sites allows is the key. I noticed that the largest sites, Myspace, Facebook, Care2, had the best methods of allowing users to be themselves, respectively.
See Care2 allowed a presentation of self that is ideal for a progressive activist (what are you political interest), and allowed them to build an identity from that. Users of myspace and facebook just want to be able to utilize the net as a means of being themselves and maintaining relationships or forging new friendships.
Just some thoughts...
I think the recognition of something like faceboook has increased and surpassed the tons of other social networks as a result of its specialization within the collegiate community. Many social networks are open to anybody and people don't even have their real names listed on them...on the contrary, facebook is good because you more than likely have a connection to somebody you are friends with whether you have class or whatever. It is also a useful tool for students when they attempt to contact other students whom they need to be in touch with.
This social networking is all very new to me. I'm not sure what makes some profiles more real to life than others. Good question!
Through assignment, I was so surprised that many many SNS exist around the world. Though two years have passed since I started using SNS, I never realize this. I am not familiar with SNS well, however judging from my experience, convenience is the key for SNS to be special(such as easy way to find old friends, to contact or interact with another people and so on). The other factor I think is friends. I was introduced SNS by my friends. So power of words may have big influence on. Beacuse my many friends(face-to-face) are on a SNS, people may use the site. What do you think about this topic?

some sites are design for a certaing group of people, ex. facebook for students or teachers. this is a major groug, this could be the reason why they have been so successful. Targeting the right audience
I agree that one thing that leads to the success of certain sites is how much personalization is allowed. MySpace allows so much personality to shine through on each page and I think that is one of the reasons that it is the most popular sites.
